To answer this question, Shamir embarked on an extensive research project using methods of Big Data and elements of Artificial Intelligence. We examined the visual behavior and preferences of presbyopes of all ages, by taking into account their Visual Age^™. (Visual Age^™ refers to the physiological age of the eye (the required addition) and is generally correlated with the patient’s chronological age.)

Research Parameters

Analyzing visual behavior, we examined the different vision zones, and their frequency of use by presbyopes between the ages of 40 and 80. Our research parameters included near vision, digital vision, intermediate vision, far vision, and switching from one vision zone to another (Switch Distances Frequency^™).

 

What we learned...

 

Young presbyopes need a good solution for digital reading and support for dynamic vision. Near vision has lower priority, due to reading mainly on handheld digital devices.

Moderate presbyopes demonstrate more balanced needs. All vision zones hold more or less equal importance.

Advanced presbyopes need a good solution for far and near vision, while Switch Distances Frequency^™, intermediate vision and digital reading are a lower priority.

The Gap with Today’s Progressive Design Concepts

Our research findings revealed a clear correlation between each visual need and the Visual Age^™ of the patient, meaning that each Visual Age^™ has different visual preferences and needs.

This conclusion supports the assumption that there is a gap between current progressive lens designs which are the "same for everyone", and the diversity of today's individual presbyopic needs.

To provide patients with the clarity they need for everyday tasks, and while staying connected when using their smartphones, tablets, and e-readers Shamir created Shamir InTouch^™.

Designed as an everyday progressive lens solution with enhanced visual comfort in the zone most utilized for handheld technology, patients will notice a quicker transition of add power in the intermediate zone (up to 25% quicker than standard progressives). Shamir InTouch^™ provides the visual comfort patients need for the “handheld zone,” a new reading area between 15” – 27”. No other lens is designed to meet the needs of this new zone.

It’s important to explain why the add power in Shamir InTouch^™ starts quicker than in standard progressive designs.

By looking at the millions of people holding their smartphones and tablets (along with some clinical studies), we found that handheld devices are held higher and closer (between 15” to 27”) than a book would be. So, we designed Shamir  InTouch^™ based off those findings, and people really like how it has increased comfort with their vision.

Wider Than The Standard Progressive Solution

Shamir Spectrum+^™ features a wider reading area and corridor, when compared to standard progressive lenses, to provide patients with more comfortable visual zones. What’s the difference compared to a standard progressive? If you compare Shamir Spectrum+^™ to a standard progressive, the reading and corridor are up to 20% wider in Shamir Spectrum+^™.

In addition to the increased reading and corridor widths, Shamir Spectrum+^™  has been designed to be more stable compared to standard PALs. Increased stability in the far vision zone allows for crisp, sharp vision at the 180º and up.

NATURAL POSTURE™ TECHNOLOGY - Ergonomic Design Concept

The near viewing zone in Shamir Spectrum+^™ is dynamically located within the lens corridor, taking into account the plus or minus power of the prescription. This reduces the need to tilt the head forwards or backwards or alternatively to lower or raise a book when reading to find the right viewing distance and angle. Any discomfort within their posture is thereby minimized and patients are ensured a comfortably natural posture during near viewing.

Understanding the need for Natural Posture™                

Natural Posture^™  will help patients by minimizing neck and shoulder discomfort and allowing for a natural posture while reading. The natural position of holding reading material is at a distance of 16 inches (40cm), with a viewing angle of about 30º. With the introduction of prescription lenses, the near viewing zone does not correspond to this angle; therefore the patient compensates by tilting their head forward or backward, or by raising or lowering their reading material. This ultimately leads to an uncomfortable and unnatural posture.
